Pecha Kucha Night Dundee Vol. 21 TAKEOVER
Pecha Kucha Night Dundee Vol. 21 TAKEOVER will take place at the Whitehall Theatre on Wednesday 23 May 2018, 7pm -10pm, in partnership with Dundee Design Festival as part of Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018! This event has been co-designed by local young people who have gained experience in selecting speakers (and speaking themselves), marketing, filming, hosting and social media. Book your tickets here before they sell out! Free tickets are available for young people.
Pecha Kucha Night (PKN) which is Japanese for ‘Chit Chat ’, runs in over 1000 cities around the world and is a regular feature of Creative Dundee’s programme of events. They are attended by 400 people from across Scotland with thousands of people from around the world tuning in to the livestream. They’re a quick-fire way of hearing from people across the city share what they do, what they are passionate about and their perspectives on life in Dundee and Scotland.
We have been working with Hot Chocolate Trust and V&A Young People Collective through setting up a handful of meetings with a group of interested young people from both organisations. The idea is that they’d have plenty of opportunities to input and design the event, making this Pecha Kucha Night something that takes us beyond what we’ve done in the past.
Our hope is that young people can gain valuable experience and skills, while we can learn from their insight and wisdom into creating the biggest event in our calendar. We’ll be sharing blogs about our learning as we meet with young people between now and Pecha Kucha on Wednesday 23 May. Read our first blog about co-designing the event here.
At Pecha Kucha Night Dundee we have around 12 diverse individuals who speak about whatever they like. It’s a speedy format; presenters have 20 images and 20 secs per image – so just under 7 mins – which means you hear a lot of interesting, thought-provoking and inspiring stuff with an audience 400+ people. It’s a great night out.
The line-up is set to include: Councillor John Alexander, Prof. Vladan Joler (from Share Lab in Serbia), Janice Aitken (Associate Dean at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design), Bit Loom (young independent video games designers) and Hannah, Nicole and Quintana from Hot Chocolate Trust. Through co-designing PKN, the group of young people have consciously thought about the full experience and have decided to have a ‘dry bar’ on the night. Our regular ‘spread the word’ feature will still take place, giving anyone the chance to grab the mic and shout out the events and opportunities they have coming up.
We would like to say huge thanks to local artist, Steven Peebles for creating the incredible PKN artwork, which was commissioned by the young people planning group. Check out more of his illustrations here. And an extended thank you to The Whitehall Theatre for their kind support!
This event will be BSL Signed by Jennifer Ramsay. Please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to be seated in a specific section to see this better.
