Design a House for a Superhero Competition

We have been delighted to support Voigt Architects Limited Design a House for a Superhero competition for Dundee school pupils which launched in June 2020.

This project which was first open to Angus schools, was designed by Jonathan Reeve of Voigt Architects Ltd and developed with Angus Council, Dundee City Council and Dundee and Angus Developing the Young Workforce. It allowed pupils to get involved in a fun end of term project from home and was developed particularly in mind for pupils who had missed their work experience placements due to COVID-19. Jonathan shared:

“We know how hard it is for parents (and pupils) right now and we wanted to do something local for school pupils to get involved in design. Voigt Architects Limited have been really active in supporting work experience for school pupils and budding designers and it is a shame that hasn’t been able to happen over the last few months.

With 5 categories for different age groups, each winner received a hand delivered design-filled goody bag and will have images of their designs displayed in the Overgate Shopping Centre from Friday 17 – Sunday 26 July. The overall winner Harper McBride, age 13, whose winning design is featured above, will have their design transformed into a 3D model. We loved their imagination of designing not just a house for a superhero, but creating their own superhero character which were both detailed by their incredible drawing skills.

Our Desk Officer, Kirsten Wallace who sat on the virtual judging panel alongside Architect Jonathan Reeve, Councillor Lynne Short and Dundee City Council’s Work Experience Coordinator, Mark Fleming, said:

“We were blown away by the standard of talent that shone through each of the entries submitted for Voigt Architects Limited’s Design a House for a Superhero competition. As the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design, we strive to celebrate and demonstrate the impact of design through engaging citizens of Dundee. We were therefore delighted to be able to support this competition and sit on the judging panel, encouraging young people that anyone can take part in design.”

With over 40 fantastic entries, it was very difficult to choose our winners listed below:
